There is always the temptation as you enter into Email Advertising Marketing  to use it as a mass medium.  Why wouldn't you when you consider how inexpensive it is to blast out an email to tens of thousands of people and it doesn't matter how many people respond.  Your cost per response is next to nothing. Unfortunately for those that do this they don't understand that they are polluting and choking the internet bandwidth.  A good rule is to make your email list for prospecting  compatible with snail mail list selection strategy.

Email advertising comes in several forms:

bulletOpt-in mailing lists by business or organizations sent to people who are interested in your subject matter and have given permission to send email.
bulletBulletins and newsletters from companies you have done business with.
bulletCarefully targeted marketing programs (similar to junk mail).
bulletSpam (An e-mail  message sent to a large number of people without consent, also known as Unsolicited Commercial E-mail (UCE) or junk e-mail.

There are four general steps to follow when you enter into email advertising marketing:

  1. Understand who's getting your e-mails
  2. Always opt to use true response lists when you can
  3. Avoid deception
  4. Analyze bottom line results properly

Always be aware, when advertising by email you are doing so at someone else's  expense. The expense being both time and money taken from the person you are trying to promote your business to.  Respect is the key word when developing and executing an email advertising marketing strategy
