If you have been considering opening a consulting internet marketing
services in direct mail advertising, computer nerd, self-publishing,
professional speaker, etc. etc. there isn't much that, in the public's eye,
separates one "internet consultant" from another. In fact, most of the companies
offering Internet consulting and internet marketing services have only managed
to make money by selling websites to people. They don't have any kind of track
record for creating profits for their customers.
Don't waste your efforts going after just anyone who might need a web site.
Go after people in certain industries. You might be better able to isolate a
benefit you can give to a certain industry. That would be more profitable than
aiming at "everyone." Things you think might actually stand a
chance out here. You still might find the going pretty rough considering anyone
with an HTML editor considers themselves to be an internet marketing consultant
these days.
You have to remember that people don't naturally understand why your mousetrap
is better. All they want is dead mice CHEAP! Moreover, you don't have the
time or money to educate them. Whenever they see an ad or a letter or anything,
they are going to have to instantly know what they stand to gain from talking to
you. It's complex...but hey, that's why strategy comes before tactics.
